It was almost midnight when she finally showed up at the door. She’d forgotten her keys on the counter, but he’d been waiting at the kitchen table until she arrived to make sure she got in okay. Before she could knock again he was at the door holding her up and waving to whatever stranger drove her home this time. She cursed at him for treating her like a child as he helped her up the stairs and into the bathroom to brush her teeth.  Read more ›

On her third birthday he bought her a small piano. It was the kind with only a few keys, each of them a different color of the rainbow. On her fourth birthday she wished for a new piano when she blew out the candles. Santa gave her one that Christmas and she practiced everyday by watching videos on the internet. On her fifth birthday she played her first concert in the living room of her grandmother’s house in front of a crowd of twenty members of her family. He could tell she was nervous, but when she looked up and saw him smiling back at her she knew she could do it. After that it became a tradition for her to play every year on her birthday for her family. At age eight she was craving a bigger crowd and a grander stage.  Read more ›

He’d been standing in the curb for about an hour before anyone stopped. He got into the passenger seat of a semi-truck and shook hands with the gracious driver. “Names Chuck Tanner,” said the driver. “Eddy Dwight,” he responded. Tanner took him across three state lines on his way to Cleveland, Ohio . On the way they talked about their lives and what got them each into the truck today. Tanner told him about his failed career as a Nascar driver, told him about how promising it all looked when he first started. His face was plastered on every magazine at the newsstand. Then it all just went away into the bottom of a bottle.  Read more ›

It was on the third lap, start of the race, and everyone in the stands could see the signs already. His car was swerving and grinding against the side wall as the other drivers passed him by. It was his big comeback race and the bleachers were filled with red and blue as kids, parents, grandparents all wore his colors. Chuck Tanner was a new man, or at least that’s what he lead everyone to believe at the press conference the day before, but it was clear the demon in the bottle hadn’t let go on him just yet.  Read more ›

“Two ducks walk into a bar. The first orders two glasses of water. The second pays the bill.”

“I’ll be here all night, folks!”

“Get off the stage!”

“My grandmother has better material than that!”

“Well your grandmother sounds like a woman of immense talent. Mind if I asked her name?”

Glenn was booed off the stage. In the dressing room he asked Rain Davis for his night’s pay. Davis, the owner of The Laughing Falcon, told Glenn to go look for his money in the pond out back. Glenn’s jokes were always hit or miss with the crowd, but since his breakup with Alice it was clear he wasn’t in the game anymore. When he sat down to write he couldn’t think of the words like he used to, couldn’t light the match and burn the ink anymore. Read more ›

PARK AVE

PART 4

A Charles Splints Case

By Dan Leicht

Chapter 18:

“Shall we go an get the real Glenn now?” said one of the doppelgängers. They both approached us as Splints was laying the man down on the bench. He pulled his flask from his pocket and removed his coat, placed it over the man’s face and upper torso.

“Let’s go see what Glenn’s up to,” said Splints before taking a sip.

“Good, yes. Let’s go see. He’s in that bait shed over there. He’s been waiting patiently for us,” said one of the Glenn clones.

“Oh yeah? I’ve never known him to be the patient type. He must’ve gotten that from you guys,” the sarcasm in Splints’ voice was lost on the two clones. I’d spent enough time with him to know most everything he said was laced in sarcasm.  Read more ›

PARK AVE/Part 4 – Chapter 17 – A Charles Splints Case

Chapter 17

By: Dan Leicht

We all got into a beat up sedan like a bunch of clowns. Splints stepped on the gas like he’d pissed off a mob boss. We were headed to the docks. My memories of Splints prior adventures lead me to believe he’d be familiar with the area due to his time spent solving the case on East Ave. During the drive Splints turned the radio up loudly, blasting classic rock out the windows into the cool air. The two Glenn lookalikes in the car clearly weren’t enjoying the music regarded as timeless by earth standards.

All of the talk about the mothership and survival of our race from earlier was obviously overbearing. I found myself trying to put the pieces together, wondering how all of it seemed so new to me. Was I not truly one of them? Had I somehow lost my prior memories? I thought back to the other shapeshifters, the ones from the hospital who had also become Splints. What had driven them so mad? I was able to keep my composure…or at least it seemed that way until Splints found me and had given me the vial. In spending time with him though I was finding myself taking fewer sips from the vial. PART 4

Chapter 16:

What they were asking me seemed ridiculous. Within my time spent with the real Splints I’d become attached, almost as if a friend. They told me the real reason we were all here on this planet, in this city. It was a worldwide takeover. Brooksend was the first city to be overrun and it’s been happening for months. The initial idea was to do things slowly so nobody knew what was going on, but Splints had ruined the timetable by finding out. If he got word out to anyone the entire mission could be compromised. The Glenn host, the one who showed us into the suite, had told me our own planet was dying, that earth was our best bet at survival.
“You’ve seen it haven’t you?”
“Seen what?” I asked. I was pacing around the room trying to get a hold on myself. My palms were beginning to sweat, my forehead too. The one Glenn was trying to reason with me, but it was clear the other four were skeptical of me.
“Our ship. Up in the sky.”
I remembered seeing something up in the sky before entering the bar on Alexander St. It distorted the clouds a bit, the ship’s camouflage no doubt. Splints had ushered me into the bar before I could make sense of it.
“I’ve seen it, yes.”
“Good. That’s the only ship we could get through the atmosphere, there are others in waiting outside the planet. Now, about Charles Splints. What’s our best method at taking him out? We’ve gotten reports of his exploits across the city and are aware even with amount of us in this room that we are outnumbered. Is there a weakness of his we can exploit?”
“I don’t know,” I answered. I was trying to compose myself as I sat on the edge of the bed and dragged my fingers through my hair.
“What have you learned about him in your time together? What have his memories taught you?”
“He’s a good man. He’s trying to save this city as a one man army and he’s doing a hell of a job.”
“Those sound like words of praise, surely nothing that can help us,” said one of the shapeshifters still leaning in the bathroom doorway.
“He wouldn’t cross us,” assured the first Glenn copy.
“We can take him out,” I said while getting back to my feet. “It won’t be hard, but we can’t do it here. It has to be somewhere he’s not familiar with. I won’t be able to take all of you with me either, only a couple, as to not arouse suspicions.”
“Certainly. Take your pick.”

***

Myself, along with the original Glenn copy, and the skeptical one from the doorway, walked back out into the living area of the penthouse. The real Splints was there taking large gulps of black coffee from an oversized mug. His eyes watched us as we moved across the room. Whenever he’s even a little bit suspicious he’ll squint his eyes a bit. I was waiting for that squint before telling him next course of action.
“Hows the real Glenn doing? Tell him i’m up for a game when he is.”
“He’s not here,” I replied. I took an apple from the counter and took a nervous bite. “He’s being kept somewhere else, one of the other Glenn’s moved him. It’s not safe here.” Charles nodded as if to agree and refilled his flask before heading for the door.
“Let’s get going to this new location then. Shall we?” he said followed by a sip from his flask of columbian blend.
